The city of
Mussoorie is located at a distance of
34 km from Dehradun in the northern Indian state of
Uttarakhand. It is also conveniently located from India's capital
city of Delhi, at 290 km by road. Being developed by Captain Young,
a British military officer, Mussoorie even today retains much of the
charm of the British Era. There are a number of tourist places and
attractions in Mussoorie to visit and explore. Since tourists keep
flocking to the place all round the year, hordes of hotels have come
up to cater to visitors accommodation requirement.
Today, Mussoorie also features many a renowned academic
institution.
The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of
Administration is a training institute of the first rank
for for officers of the
Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
The city of Mussoorie is also home to many schools, whose history
date back to the colonial era.
St George College,
the
Oak Grove School and the Woodstock School are
very popular colonial-period schools. The city of Mussoorie has a
number of churches and Roman Catholic institutions. There is a Roman
Cathedral located here too. The first brewery of India was set up in
Mussoorie in 1850.
Mussoorie is closely located from major cities like
Delhi,
Ambala and
Chandigarh (Punjab). Landour
(the convalescent depot for European troops),
Barlowganj
and Jharipani (8 km) are adjoining towns in Mussoorie. All
these small towns are a part of the '
Greater Mussoorie'.
Visitors to Mussoori can also go on excursions to these places for
more sightseeing and fun. Summers in Mussoorie are pleasant while
winters are chilly. Hindi, English and Garhwali (local dialect) are
the major spoken languages in Mussoorie.
